INFECTIOUS BRONCHITIS

What is it? Many people refer to it as "Kennel Cough" but this is very confusing as dogs are just as likely to become infected in the park, in the vets waiting room or anywhere they come into contact with each other. The chief symptom is coughing which is aggravated by exercise or excitement.

What causes it? The major cause is a bacteria called Bordetella bronchiseptica. Another organism involved is the canine para-influenza virus plus a few other viruses.

How can I prevent it? Your veterinary surgeon will vaccinate your dog with nasal drops called Intrac preferably a month before your dog comes in for training. This needs renewing every six months. Protection against the para-influenza virus is contained in most yearly vaccines. Unfortunately the other viruses that cause dogs to cough cannot be protected against.

How can we help? At dog training uk every pen has a solid infection barrier preventing direct contact (and eliminating aggressive behaviour). We have a strict cross infection regime using high quality chemical virucides (as used in hospitals). We do not use bleach as a cleaning chemical as this can cause sore pads. We also insist on full vaccinations and recommend Intrac. It is very unlikely that your dog would come into contact with an infected dog during its residential dog training course as such infections are very rare. However we like to take all available precautions to make your dog's obedience training course as pleasant as possible.
